  • Synopsis: Based on Charles Dickens' novel, the story, set in 19th-century England, follows the titular character and his family. Their comfortable life turns cold when Nicholas' father dies, leaving the family broke. Nicholas, his mother, and his sister set off to London to live with their wealthy but mean Uncle Ralph (Christopher Plummer), who keeps the three apart. Nicholas is sent off to work as a teacher at Dotheboys Hall, where a cruel headmaster named Wackford Squeers (Jim Broadbent) mistreats the orphans. Nicholas befriends one student, the particularly picked-on Smike (Jamie Bell), and the two become friends, eventually escaping Squeers' wrath and plotting a way to get Nicholas' family back together.
